This video captures a style of worship that places a strong emphasis on emotion, sensuality, and intensity. While this was not representative of a typical Sunday morning in my church, it was much closer to the atmosphere I experienced at many youth retreats and conferences growing up and as a youth leader. Looking back, I have come to believe that experiences like this often blurred the line between worship and emotional stimulation, making it difficult to distinguish a genuine encounter with God from the effects of music, crowd energy, and atmosphere. This video reminds me of some of the questions that began the unraveling of my assumptions about worship and eventually led me to seek something deeper, more reverent, and more rooted in the historic life of the Church.
